Birch Run's Main Street Crossing Is Closed This Week: Getting Around Town and What's Still On This Fall

The Main Street railroad crossing in the Village of Birch Run has been closed to traffic since Monday, Oct. 19. Lake State Railway Company is rebuilding it, and the work is expected to take seven days. That makes today the fourth day. Drivers heading west and drivers heading east each have their own detour, so the road you leave town on this week is probably not the road you come home on. Those detour roads also matter after the crossing reopens. Beyer Road and the corner of Main and Maple are where Birch Run's November and December plans are set, so the routes you learn now will still be useful in December.

What the Crew Is Doing at the Tracks

WNEM reported on Oct. 14 that crews would take out and replace both the mainline and siding tracks, put in new crossing panels, and repave the road approaches on each side. This is a full rebuild of the crossing, which is why the closure runs a week.

The Village had warned about it earlier. For a while, the notice on the Village of Birch Run's news page said only that the Main Street closure at the tracks was coming "soon," with dates to be posted once they were known. The Oct. 19 start date came from the railroad's schedule, as reported by WNEM.

A seven-day job that started on a Monday would finish around the weekend of Oct. 24 and 25. Treat that as a projection, not a reopening date. The Village has said it will post any schedule changes and announce when the crossing reopens. Until that notice goes up, plan for the detours to stay in place.

Out One Way, Home Another

There are two separate detours, one for each direction of travel:

  • Westbound: Maple Road to Canada Road to Elms Road.
  • Eastbound: Church Street to Burt Road to Beyer Road.

The routes don't mirror each other. If you usually drive straight across Main and back, this week your morning and evening trips will follow different roads. The quick errand where you'd cross the tracks, park, and cross back now covers more ground than usual.

Two names on these routes will come up again before the year ends. The westbound detour starts on Maple Road, the same street that meets Main at the corner where the village's December event is listed. Birch Run Community Park, which the township lists at 13001 to 13175 Maple Road, is also on Maple. The eastbound detour ends on Beyer Road. That's where Birch Run Premium Outlets sits, at 12240 South Beyer Road, and it's where November's biggest shopping weekend happens.

The Main Street Stops Still on Your List

Only the crossing is closed. Main Street is not, and the stops along it are still there. You just reach them by a different route.

  • Birch Run Deli at 8501 Main Street. Its website lists hours of Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., so a lunch run there this week falls within the closure.
  • Birch Run Township office at 8425 Main Street. The township website lists office hours of Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need the clerk, Thursday is your last weekday chance before the projected end of the work.
  • Birch Run Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce at 7971 Main Street, Suite 4.

Before you go, figure out whether your trip crosses the tracks. If it does, look at which direction you're driving and use the matching detour from the list above. If it doesn't, your usual route works fine.

Saturday Lands Near the End of the Closure Window

The biggest event on this week's calendar comes on Saturday, near the end of the projected closure. The Birch Run Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce is holding its 7th annual Trucks, Trunks & Treats on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Birch Run Speedway & Event Center, 10945 Dixie Highway. The event page lists touch-a-truck, real race car drivers, concessions, photo booths, and kid-friendly activities, and calls it one of the largest trunk-or-treat events in Michigan.

The Speedway's own race report from Oct. 10 names Trucks, Trunks & Treats as the next event at the track. The one after that is the 2026 Awards Banquet for the NASCAR Local Racing Series on Nov. 21, and tickets are $30 through the track at 989-624-9778.

If the crossing is still closed Saturday afternoon and your drive to Dixie Highway would normally take you over the Main Street tracks, use the detour for your direction and leave a few extra minutes. Before you head out, check the Village news page for a reopening notice.

Beyer Road Picks Up Again in November

The eastbound detour puts drivers on Beyer Road this week. Three weeks later, that same road is where Birch Run's biggest shopping weekend takes place.

Birch Run Premium Outlets has a newer store since summer. MLive reported that Victoria's Secret opened on Friday, Aug. 14, in Section A between Kate Spade and Samsonite. It took over the space Eddie Bauer left. MLive wrote in April that the Eddie Bauer outlet at 12150 S. Beyer Road would close in the second quarter, with Victoria's Secret expected to move in sometime between July and September.

Go Great Lakes Bay lists the 30th Annual Deal Hunters' Weekend at the outlets for Nov. 13 to 15, with free admission. The listing doesn't print a year, and the outlets' news and events page currently shows only individual store promotions. Treat Nov. 13 to 15 as the listed date and look for the center to confirm it as the weekend gets closer.

December Brings the Calendar Back to Main and Maple

The westbound detour starts at Maple Road. The next listed village event is at that same corner.

Go Great Lakes Bay lists Christmas in the Village for Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Main and Maple Streets, with the Birch Run Rotary Club as the contact. The Chamber's Christmas in the Village page still asks people to stay tuned for 2026 details, so until the organizers post it, Dec. 4 is provisional. If the date holds, the crossing will have new panels and fresh pavement on its approaches by then, and the evening will take place a short distance down Main from this week's work.
